One of the most popular weight loss drugs on the market, Orlistat which is promoted in the United States as Xenical (prescription) and Alli (OTC), is being reviewed by the FDA regarding recent reports of liver-related problems while taking the drug.
The review comes after 32 reports of liver injury were received between the years of 1999 and 2008 by patients using Orlistat. These reports were submitted to the “Adverse Event Reporting System”. Only two of these reports were in the US though. The most common complaints from these people were that they felt weak, had abdominal pains and were suffering from jaundice (a yellowing of the skin or white part of the eyes). 27 of the 32 cases were reported to be hospitalized.
Xenical is a drug manufactured by Roche Pharmaceuticals (Alli by GlaxoSmithKline), and works by reducing the absorption of fats in the food you eat which decreases the amount of calories that enter the body and was specifically created for obese people. Orlistat is a derivative of lipstatin, which is a strong natural inhibitor of pancreatic lipases (fat metabolizing enzymes).
The most common side-effects reported by consumers using Orlistat are gastrointestinal. These mainly include steatorrhea (loose or oily stools) and fecal incontinence. These side-effects are said to decrease over time and were considered the only major adverse reaction to the drug until these latest reports were compiled.
For the time being, the FDA has advised that health-care professionals don’t change their prescription practices regarding Orlistat. However, the do state that current users only take the products as directed or prescribed.
The agency has urged anyone who experiences any side-effects from either Alli or Xenical to report them immediately to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program. The FDA also stated that all future findings regarding the review of the Orlistat drug will be made public as soon as the review is completed.
